Fort Stewart Shooting Sparks Debate Over Military Base Security

 A Shocking Turn at One of the U.S. Army’s Largest Bases

On August 6, 2025, a routine day at Fort Stewart, Georgia, turned into a crisis when Sergeant Quornelius Radford, 28, opened fire on five fellow soldiers inside a brigade complex. Using a personal handgun, Radford initiated the attack shortly after 11 a.m., leading to an immediate lockdown of the base.

Fellow soldiers quickly intervened and subdued the gunman, who was arrested at the scene. Thanks to their swift actions, no one was killed. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals; three required surgery, but all are now in stable condition.

Are Current Military Gun Policies Enough?

The incident has reignited serious questions about the U.S. Army’s firearm policies on domestic bases. Under current regulations, soldiers are not permitted to carry personal firearms while on duty—except under specific circumstances like at shooting ranges or in base housing. Generally, only military police carry weapons on base.
