What Is Legionnaires’ Disease?

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by inhaling water droplets contaminated with Legionella pneumophila bacteria. These bacteria thrive in cooling towers, large plumbing systems, hot tubs, and decorative fountains. It does not spread person-to-person, and drinking water is not a common transmission route.

Outbreak Investigation

Officials have tested multiple building cooling towers, finding Legionella bacteria in 11 towers. Building owners were ordered to disinfect these systems immediately to reduce the risk of further spread. While the exact source has not been fully confirmed, these cooling towers remain the most likely culprit.

Legionnaires’ disease symptoms typically appear 2–10 days after exposure and include:
