Tragic Shooting Near CDC and Emory University in Atlanta: Key Facts and Updates

 

On August 8, 2025, a deadly shooting erupted outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters and near Emory University in Atlanta, leaving one police officer dead and the gunman deceased. The event sparked lockdowns, emergency alerts, and a rapid multi-agency response.

The Incident

Authorities say the gunman, later identified as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White of Kennesaw, Georgia, opened fire with a long gun around 4:50 p.m. Multiple CDC buildings were struck by bullets, shattering windows and sending staff scrambling for cover. Nearby Emory University, its hospital, and several childcare facilities were placed under lockdown while police secured the area.

Responding officers tracked the suspect to the second floor of a CVS Pharmacy across from the CDC. In the confrontation that followed, DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose, 33, was critically wounded. He later died at the hospital. The shooter was found dead at the scene; investigators have not confirmed whether his fatal injury was self-inflicted or the result of police gunfire.

Suspect Background

White’s motive remains under investigation, but neighbors and acquaintances told reporters he had recently become outspoken about anti-vaccine beliefs and appeared physically unwell in recent months. Authorities have not yet released any evidence linking those views directly to the shooting.

While the attack caused widespread panic, no civilians were physically injured. Ninety-two children at a CDC daycare were safely reunited with their families after lockdowns were lifted. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is leading the case, with assistance from the FBI and local law enforcement agencies.

Officer David Rose was a former U.S. Marine who joined the DeKalb County Police Department in September 2024. He is remembered by colleagues and community members as a dedicated public servant. He leaves behind his wife, who is expecting their third child, and two young children.
